Definition: Participant observation is a research method in which the researcher actually takes part in the social phenomenon being studies.
Examples:
In a classic study on mental hospitals, researchers had themselves admitted as patients under false pretenses so that they could observe how patients, including themselves, were treated by hospital staff.
