Definition: Language is the collection of words and the rules of govern syntax and grammar that govern how words are supposed to be arranged in order to convey a particular meaning. Language is at the core of every culture as it is through language that we are able to create the meaning of human experience, thought, feeling, appearance, and behavior. It enables us to create reality itself by substituting words for direct experience. The sociological interest in language covers anything from the analysis of meaning and conversation to questions about the social construction of reality to the importance of language in the process of socialization and identity formation to the role of language in social oppression.
