Definition: A hypothesis is a prediction about the relationship between variables. It is usually based on theoretical expectations about how things work. There are two types of hypotheses:

Null hypothesis: A null hypothesis always predicts the absence of a relationship between two variables. For example, “There is no relationship between education and income.”

Alternative hypothesis: The alternative hypothesis states an actual expectation, such as, “Higher levels of education increase the likelihood of earning a higher income.”
