Emergent Properties

From , former About.com Guide

Definition: Emergent properties is a concept that was developed by Emile Durkheim and later expanded by Talcott Parsons as a part of the functionalist perspective. It argues that the properties of social systems emerge from social interaction but cannot be understood simply by studying the individuals who take part in that interaction. Instead, individual behavior can only be understood fully in relation to those properties.
