Disengagement Theory

Definition: Disengagement theory states that in every society, the elderly undergo a process of adjustment in which they leave important public roles and narrow their social world to family and friends. This process benefits societies by avoiding the potential disruption of its key members dying suddenly. It also enables individuals to die without the stress and strain of fuller participation in social life.
