Death Rate

Definition: The death rate, also known as mortality rate, is most commonly measured by crude death rate, which is the number of deaths per 1,000 people in the midyear population. When used to make comparisons, crude death rates are often misleading because they do not take into account differences in age structure. Two ways of dealing with this are to calculate the age-adjusted death rate (which uses a single standard age structure in order to isolate the effects of mortality alone) or to calculate the life expectancy (a hypothetical measure of how long a group of people could expect to live on average if their risk of dying at each age continued to be as it is now).
