From , former About.com Guide

Definition: Cultural materialism is a theory that explains aspects of culture, such as religious beliefs, as being adaptations to the physical or material conditions of life in a particular society, especially as these relate to geography, climate, and population. This theory has been applied to a wide range of social phenomena, from war and male supremacy to cannibalism and the Jewish prohibition on eating pork.
