Definition: During a social interaction, an account is what people offer to others when called upon to explain their appearance or behavior. They can range from the relatively insignificant ways we make excuses to friends to formal defenses against accusations of serious crimes. Accounts are sociologically important because they are a part of what we use to create impressions of ourselves to other people. In this way, we influence their perceptions, attitudes, behavior, and expectations of us.
