Nature Vs. Nurture Experiment

From , Former About.com GuideJune 10, 2011

Follow me on:

Recently there was a news story about a couple in Toronto, Canada who gave birth to a baby name Storm. The couple decided not to disclose the sex of the child to anyone except the child's two siblings, one family friend, and two midwives who helped deliver the child. The reason for the sex secret: the couple wants their children to have the freedom to choose who they want to be, unconstrained by social norms about males and females.

You could call this an experiment in the nature versus nurture debate. Though not the first instance of such an experiment, it is the most recent and one that is causing quite a debate.

Is there harm in letting a baby grow up in a gender-neutral world, letting the child choose the male or female gender on their own? What are your thoughts on this?
